City of Middleton Advances Next Steps for Community Campus Project

MIDDLETON, Wis. — The Middleton Common Council has directed City staff to begin developing a request for proposals (RFP) to select an architectural firm for the Community Campus Project, marking the next step in the long-term initiative to reimagine and modernize key civic spaces in the community.

The Council motion directs staff to “develop an RFP process to select an architect for a project not to exceed $100 million for the Community Campus Project.”

The Community Campus Project has been under discussion for several years and focuses on the future needs of the Middleton Public Library, Senior Center, and City Hall civic spaces. City officials said the action allows the City to continue evaluating the project's scope, design, and financing options while taking advantage of current timing and funding strategies intended to minimize long-term financial impacts on residents.

“Our Community Campus Project will help us develop welcoming, healthy spaces for residents of all ages and for our staff,” said Mayor Lisa R. Janairo. “Other municipalities in Dane County and elsewhere in Wisconsin have managed to create accessible, energy-efficient facilities at a reasonable cost. We’ll learn from their experiences so we can do the same for the people of Middleton.”

As part of the next phase, the City will begin a formal Request for Proposal process to identify and select an architectural firm to assist with additional project design and development. Updated financing scenarios and project timelines are also expected to be evaluated as planning progresses.

Alder Randall Crow added, “I look forward to the work that lies ahead as we establish a true community center that residents will find welcoming and accommodating for years to come — a place for gathering comfortably that meets the needs of our growing community and a place all in Middleton can be proud of. I am encouraged by the support of the Common Council to move this project forward.”

City officials emphasized that additional discussions, public information, and project details will be shared as the process moves forward.

The action follows ongoing discussions by the Common Council regarding long-term facility needs, project scope, and opportunities to create modern, accessible, and sustainable civic spaces that serve current residents and future generations.

The Middleton Public Library Board of Trustees also recently expressed support for advancing the project, citing aging facilities, space limitations, and the opportunity to improve civic functions and community gathering spaces.
