Overture Galleries, free and open to the public, in partnership with Dane Arts Mural Arts (DAMA), celebrate the talents of alternative high school students from Madison West HS SAIL program & Sun Prairie’s Prairie Phoenix Academy in an Overture Playhouse exhibit of self-portraits done under the direction of DAMA lead artists. The exhibition, in Overture’s Playhouse Gallery Saturday, April 15-Sunday, May 28, also includes videos of students working in their classrooms on the mural and photographs of murals they have painted.

Overture’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion Ed Holmes, former principal of West High School, established the original connection and partnership with DAMA and West High School’s SAIL program and was instrumental in the development of the mural project at West HS. “The beauty of the project was that the [SAIL] students came together in collaboration in a way they never could have imagined to create a special gift they were able to give to their school,” Holmes commented. “It is a standing testament that everyone has something of value to contribute to the greater good. Access to the wonderful Playhouse Gallery at Overture gives us the opportunity to share the newest collaborative art project DAMA and the students have created with Madison and surrounding communities.”

“DAMA gives students an opportunity to develop and practice the skills that will allow them to succeed: patience, focus, creativity, inter-personal communication, and teamwork,” commented Sonya Sankaran, community artist. “More importantly, it provides a context for them to unveil inner qualities that will help them to thrive - confidence, self-efficacy, giving back, and respect. But truly, what the DAMA process gives to artists, teachers and youth alike is the joy they experience together in discovering these gifts.”

Ray Cox, a teacher at Prairie Phoenix Academy, reports that “creating self-portraits with Dane Arts Mural Arts was an AWESOME project for Prairie Phoenix Academy students. The participating students had an opportunity to create a self-portrait as they perceived themselves. Some painted a realistic portrait, while others traveled inside themselves to bring out what was there to share with the world. Regardless, the finished products reflect on each of these unique individuals that I have had an opportunity to work with over the years. I appreciate getting to know these students from a variety of perspectives.”

“DAMA has been a real boost to our alternative program. Doing academics all day, so many of our students have a creative side we don't tap without such activities,” said Timothy Bergen, a teacher involved in West High School’s SAIL program. “They look forward to getting together with the artists and have a renewed sense of pride during the rest of the week.”
